I do feel inadequate when this song is sung - truthfully it gives me the guilt trip because I'm no where near anything as idealistic. But I struggle with idealism versus realism or practicality. but it's hard to accept myself when I know how far away I am from everything written in this song. On the other hand I do know that when I do my best then that's my being as great as Moshe Rabeinu- ie he used his full talents and strengths and when I do too then I'm doing as best as he did. So I have to keep reminding myself of this. Thanks for this discussion that allowed me to clear this for me once again!

Eshes Chayil I sit across from my husband Friday night and look forward to him singing praises of the past week. Just wish he knew the melody my grandfather sang in the early 50's. But no one seems to have the previous melody

I love Proverbs 31. It’s my guideline and yardstick to my womanhood. It does not make me feel lacking or inadequate. To be a woman of Proverbs 31 is the highest compliment from our husband, children and community.
How a man feels when he is praised by his family and community? I guess that falls on the individual man. My husband strives to make my life happen and is worthy of my adoration and praise. Even though we are older and moving slower, people cannot help but notice our love because we take the time to honor each other with joy in our countenance both public and privately. It is not for show or false, it is all the time and true.

At a recent Jewish youth movement Shabbaton with parents present, I was asked to give an introductory explanation to Eshet Chayil. The organizer asked me not to give my usual explanation which I had once given at another Shabbatton. He was afraid that the feminists present would get insulted. Well I gave my usual explanation that all week long everyone is busy. Now, husbands have time to say a special thank you to their wives that they are more than just a wife; they’re special,an Eshet Chayil.
After I gave my usual explanation, one of the women came over and thanked me for my introduction. She said that hearing it meant a lot.
One of the greatest mitzvot one can fulfill is Hakarot Hatov, saying Eshet Chayil is saying Thank You.

No He composed the version sung today. But my late grandfather sang a different melody. I would like the notes to that one so my husband can learn that melody. I think it is from the Rebbe Rashab
